Arranged Marriages During the Elizabethan Era:
Purpose- The purpose of arranged marriages during the Elizabethan Era were to maintain wealth and bring prestige. Also landowners strongly encouraged it due to it increasing the size of their acreage.(3)
Classes who participated- Classes that participated in arranged marriages during the Elizabethan Era were people in high social classes. People of lower classes had a higher chance of choosing who they were to get married to. The reason of this goes back to the history and purpose of it all.(4)
Advantages- Advantages of participating in arranged marriage during this particular time era was that it allowed good social status and it also allowed for children to be begat and to carry on their legacy and family name. Not to mention that if a woman ever became a widow, she would be allowed to own her own territory and run businesses. Another advantage included family and community support.(4)
Disadvantages- On the other hand, disadvantages for not participating in it would mean less dowry for high social classes and for the lower classes, men and women had to spend their lives as a servant to aristocratic families.(4)
Consequences for refusing- What seems to be the most devastating part about this topic are the consequences for what happens when you decide to refuse to go along with an arranged marriage. Physical violence would be done both to men and women. Such as acid attacks which are known to cause one to become blinded or maimed. People also considered women, witches by their neighbors, if they did not marry and then along with people questioning whether you were a witch or not would have its own consequences.(5)
